Ultherapy is a non-invasive treatment which uses safe ultrasound technology to lift and tighten the skin naturally. This procedure works by stimulating collagen production by delivering focused ultrasound energy to the skin’s foundation layer typically addressed in cosmetic surgery—without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin.
Ultherapy is gaining in popularity for toning loose skin because it works without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin (meaning its “very” non-invasive).
What exactly is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is a safe, non-surgical ultrasound treatment that counteracts the effects of time and gravity on your skin.
Ultherapy uses the body’s own regenerative response to gently and gradually lift skin on the eyebrow, under the chin and on the neck, and smooth lines and wrinkles on the décolletage.
Which part of the body can Ultherapy treat?
1. Tired and saggy eyes
2. Sagging cheeks
3. Jowls – Ageing jawline
4. Under the chin
5. Any loose skin on your face
6. Loose skin on your neck
Ultherapy works without needles or toxins
Unlike lasers, radio frequency, surgery and other technologies, non-surgical Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin to deliver the right amount of ultrasound energy at the right depths and the right temperature. This energy triggers a natural response under the skin which will kickstart the regenerative process that produces fresh new collagen.
Here is a short video on how Ultherapy works
What can I expect during the procedure?
After cleansing the skin and identifying the specific areas to be treated, your Doctor will apply the ultrasound gel and place the smooth treatment applicator against your skin. Next, your provider will use Ultherapy’s ultrasound imaging to first see deep within the skin to determine optimal placement of the treatment energy, and then deliver the focused ultrasound energy beneath the skin’s surface.
During the treatment delivery, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, indicating that the collagen-building process has been initiated.
Ultherapy treats three distinct layers beneath the skin, including the deep connective tissue typically addressed in a surgical facelift.
The following video shows where the microfocused ultrasound energy is delivered, and where the collagen-building stimulated by the treatment will take place. The result is a lift to the skin over the course of two-three months.
How long will the treatment take?
The length of the Ultherapy treatment will depend on the area being treated and your individual treatment plan. A face and neck procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes, while a chest treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.
What can I expect after the treatment?
There is no down time for Ultherapy, and you will be able to return to your normal activities right away, and there are no special measures you need to take. Your skin may appear a bit flushed immediately after the treatment, but any redness should disappear in a matter of hours.
How long does Ultherapy take to take effect?
Some patients see an initial effect right after their treatment, but the real results appear over 2−3 months as new collagen works to lift and tighten skin on the neck, chin and brow as well as smooth skin on the chest. While Ultherapy won’t duplicate the results of a facelift, it’s a clinically proven non-invasive alternative for those not ready for surgery—and can even be an option for patients who wish to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.
Am I a good candidate for Ultherapy?
If you are someone with skin that has “relaxed” to the point of looking, and often feeling, less firm, you may be a good candidate for Ultherapy.
If you have lowered eyebrow line, loose skin on the neck, sagging skin on the eyelids, sagging under the chin, and lines or wrinkles on the chest, you will be a good candidate.
How long will the results last?
The results for ultherapy will usually last up to 2 years, but this could depend on the condition of your skin, your diet and lifestyle, age, genetics, etc. If you want to always have the good effect, a good time to go back to your Doctor will be 1 to 2 years to keep things tight and fresh. As part of good medical advice, a healthy lifestyle in moderation is always helpful to feel and look youthful.
Some common questions on Ultherapy
1. Can ultherapy fully replace a facelift?
Ultherapy treats the deep foundational layer addressed in cosmetic surgery, but will not duplicate the results of a facelift. Ultherapy is a great alternative, however, especially for those not ready for surgery or for patients looking to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.
2. How is Ultherapy different from laser treatments?
Ultherapy uses sound energy – tried-and-true ultrasound – which has unique properties that allow it to bypass the surface of the skin to treat depths not matched by any other non-invasive cosmetic device. Ultherapy ultrasound stimulates collagen production in the skin’s foundation, resulting in a clinically significant lift of tissue over 2-3 months.
Lasers rely on light energy, which cannot reach deeper skin layers at an optimal temperature, so laser treatments typically only treat superficial skin and are not FDA-cleared to lift skin.
Since the two technologies often treat different types of skin issues, they’re actually very compatible.
3. How does this procedure stimulate the production of collagen?
Ultherapy deposits focused ultrasound energy deep beneath the skin at the optimal temperature for collagen regeneration. The treatment jumpstarts a natural process, known as neocollagenesis, to produce fresh, new collagen. Ultherapy doesn’t involve any creams, fillers or toxins; it just relies on your body’s own collagen-building process for natural, noticeable results.
4. What are the side effects of this procedure?
The skin might appear flushed at first, but the redness should disappear within a few hours. Some patients experience slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch, but these are temporary in nature. Other, less common post-procedural effects may include temporary bruising or numbness on small areas of skin. As with any medical procedure, there is the possibility for other rare effects, which your practitioner will review with you.
