Because most Asians are born with single eyelid, double eyelid surgery is one of the most common surgery for Asians. This surgery will increase the size of the eyes, bringing out the beautiful features of one’s face. Like most surgeries which will have swelling and the potential for infection after the procedure, it is very important to take note of your post operative care. Even if the surgery was performed smoothly, if your post operative care is not good, it still leaves the possibility of infection and a bad outcome. Here, we will explore how to care for your eyes after double eyelid surgery.
For 1 – 2 weeks after the surgery, there will be swelling and bruising around the eyelids. The patient will also be able to see the incision on the eyelid, making one’s eyes look unnatural. This will also cause one’s eyes to be uncomfortable when opening and closing.
The severity of the swelling will depend on each individual patient and their eyelid condition. For example, patients with thick eyelids will experience more swelling and will take a longer time to recover. As for the stitches for the double eyelids, they should be taken out about 5 – 7 days after surgery.
Here are some ways as to care for your eyes after double eyelid surgery:
1. Icing the eyelid swelling
It is critical to ice the wound to keep the swelling down at least for the first three days after surgery. The first three days is crucial in determining how well your recovery will proceed from here. So always remember to ice your eyelids to reduce swelling and this will help in a faster recovery.
At this early stage, it is important to elevate your head, so that blood will flow away from the wound area. Even when sleeping, ensure the eyelids (head) will always be elevated. Even when sleeping, it is advised to use more pillows to keep the head up.
3. Avoid strenuous activities
Avoid bending over, lifting heavy objects and extreme facial expressions during this time. Basically, avoid anything that may affect the wound at this point in time.
4. Avoid smoking and drinking
Do not smoke and drink alcohol during this crucial recovery period, preferable for up to a month after surgery. This will help in a faster recovery and healing if you avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.
5. Avoid make up and contact lenses
When healing, be sure not to put on make up as this may irritate the wound on the eyelids. Also if you have to remove make up, you may rub the eyelid region resulting in incision opening and fold loosening. This can result in infection, and as a result leave scarring and even a botched surgery.
In summary, do be patient! Healing takes time and while you may not see results immediately, once healed you will achieve beautiful cosmetic surgery results. Your recovery is crucial during this recovery period for double eyelid surgery.
